Ronald E. Groves

Ronald E. Groves, 83, of Somerset, passed away at 3:26 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2025, at Genesis Hospice and Palliative Care. Ron was born January 5, 1942, in Avondale, Ohio, the son of the late Vernon E. and Mabel (Payne) Groves. He served in the Ohio National Guard from 1961-1964. He started working on the farm for Clyde Henderson when he was around 9 or 10 years old. He later worked as a welder for Peabody Coal Company for 21 years, and Clow Water Systems for 13 years. Ron was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the outdoors. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara E. (Yarger) Groves; four sons, William (Becky) Groves of Crooksville, Thomas (Paula) Groves of Newark, Richard (Patricia) Groves of New Lexington, and Steven (Marianne) Groves of New Lexington; 11 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; one brother, Wayne Groves; one sister, Myrna Groves; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Pennington. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2025, at the Bope-Thomas Funeral Home in Somerset where services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2025, with Pastor James Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Somerset Cemetery.
