Paul Leslie Campbell, 87, of Somerset, Ohio, died on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Licking Memorial Hospital in Newark. Paul was born on September 25, 1937, in Chillicothe, Ohio, to the late William E. and Bertha R. (Freeman) Campbell. He graduated from Amanda High School in 1955, where he was active in the Marine Reserves. At the age of 17, he volunteered to enlist in the U.S. Navy. He became a submariner and spent 32 months aboard the USS Medregal (SS-480/AGSS-480), a diesel-electric submarine. Paul married the love of his life, Jane Hillis, in October 1961. He and Jane operated Campbell’s Snack Bar from 1971 through 1985. After selling the business, Paul successfully transitioned to a career as a Rural Mail Carrier for the US Postal Service. His route covered the Buckeye Lake and Fairfield Beach area. He retired in 2000. A committed member of the Somerset community, Paul devoted countless hours to coaching youth baseball from the Little League Snack Bar Pirates to Somerset Babe Ruth, to American Legion in Zanesville. He volunteered for Sheridan High School football as a member of the chain gang for many years after his sons graduated. In 1982, Sheridan Athletic Boosters recognized Paul as an outstanding volunteer for his fundraising success and support of high school sports. Paul also was active in Holy Trinity Catholic Parish where he served as a lector for more than eight years and an active volunteer for the Garden Party and other fundraising events for the school and parish. Paul was an avid golfer and member of local golf leagues, playing with a group of friends, who also took spring trips to places such as Myrtle Beach, SC. He was a lifelong Cincinnati Reds fan – a passion he inherited from his mother and passed along to his kids. He loved to travel. After retirement, Paul and Jane traveled by car to all of the National Parks of the West and drove to most of the states in the contiguous United States. For many years, he attended reunions of the USS Medregal and he was honored to participate in Honor Flight with fellow veterans Bob Shumaker and Frank Scurlock in September 2019. He never missed a school or sporting event for his kids and seven grandchildren. He lived a rich and full life filled with joys of adventure and companionship of Jane, his loving family, and many good friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Roberta (Dick) Hawkins, and brothers, John (Kathryn), Roger, and Floyd (Janice) Campbell. He is survived by his wife, Jane, and children, Scott (Kathy) Campbell of Savannah, GA, Brad (Lucy Bartimole) Campbell of Upper Arlington, Eve (Tim) Smith of Thornville, and Julie (Tim) Fletcher of Medford, OR; brother, Gayle (Dixie) of Gahanna; grandchildren, Kristina (Jason) Hoskins, Paul B. Campbell, Lucas Campbell, Charlotte Campbell, Emma Campbell, Ben (Jessie Nauer) Smith, and Elizabeth (Isaac) Dumolt; great-grandsons, Thomas and Michael Hoskins; and many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews from Campbell and Hillis families. Friends may call from 1-4 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at the Bope-Thomas Funeral Home in Somerset. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Somerset at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2025, with Father Steven Carmody and co-celebrant Father Donald Franks officiating.
