Martin Hupp Obituary

SPRING, TX - It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Martin Thomas Hupp, 56, of Spring, TX, formerly of Glenford, OH. Marty was born on May, 16, 1964 in Zanesville, OH, the fifth child to Barbara (Kluk) Hupp of Zanesville and the late Lee Owen “Chunk” Hupp. A 1982 graduate of Sheridan High School, Marty went on to study Petroleum Engineering at Marietta College where he graduated in 1986. He also attended seminars at Harvard Business School. After college, petroleum jobs were scarce, so Marty spent one year working as a 7th grade math teacher at Lincoln Junior High for the Newark City Schools. A lead from a friend led to his first job in the oil industry, gaining employment with Dowell Schlumberger in Enid, Oklahoma. He then went to work for Carbo Ceramics in Houston, Texas. He retired 7 years ago after 27 years in the oil and gas industry. Marty had a fond appreciation for his beloved Marietta College and Dr. Bob Chase of the Petroleum Engineering Department. While in Houston, Marty founded and hosted The Annual Marietta College Petroleum Alumni Golf Tournament. For the past 16 years, this event raised significant donations for Marietta College. Because of this philanthropic work, Marty was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Service Award and was also inducted into the Marietta College Petroleum Engineering Hall of Fame. Marty was an avid sports fan and historian. He loved the Cleveland Browns, Ohio State Buckeyes and Cincinnati Reds. As a resident of Houston, he also adopted the Texans and Astros and attended many games. Marty was also very proud of being on Coach Paul Culver’s inaugural football season at Sheridan High School in 1981. As a not so scratch golfer, Marty was a member of the “hole in one club”. Along with his mother, Marty is survived by his siblings, Jeff (Beth) Hupp of Katy, TX, Kim (Doug) Miller of Glenford, OH, Greg (Shari) Hupp of Springfield, OH, Erin (John) Pakozdi of Morrow, OH and Teresa (Mark) Ulbrich of Zanesville, OH. Marty was the favorite uncle of 17 nieces and nephews. Marty will forever be remembered for his infectious laugh and never having met a stranger. He was a fierce competitor and never liked to lose while playing Jeopardy, trivia, euchre or completing the newspaper’s daily word jumble. Marty was also a proud member of the Sons of the American Legion Leo Ryan Post 58 of Somerset, OH. In lieu of flowers the Hupp family would like to have memorial contributions made to the Somerset American Legion Leo Ryan Post 58 or Sheridan High School in Thornville, OH. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Friday, May 14, 2021 at the Bope-Thomas Funeral Home in Somerset. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 15, 2021 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Somerset, Ohio. Burial will follow in Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery. www.bopethomasfuneralhome.com
