Martha Ann Sagan, age 92, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2026, in Lancaster, OH surrounded by her loving family. Born on June 8, 1934, in Junction City, OH, Martha was the daughter of James and Helen Wollenberg, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her father and mother-in-law Stephen and Alfreda Sagan, beloved brother and sister-in-law, James Leo and Ann Wollenberg and brother-in-law George Sagan. A lifelong advocate for education and learning, Martha excelled academically from an early age. She graduated from Junction City High School and went on to attend The Ohio State University, becoming the first member of her family to earn a college degree. Her accomplishments reflected a determination and work ethic that would serve as an inspiration to her family for generations. Martha married the love of her life, Stephen “Bob” Sagan, and together they built a life rooted in family, community and faith. They spent most of their lives in Perry County, OH, where they raised their family and formed many lasting friendships. Above all else, Martha’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her children: Cynthia (Scott) Elwood, Stephanie Poston, Melissa (Chad) Lotozo, Michael (Colleen) Sagan, and Christopher (Kelly) Sagan; Grandchildren Josh (Cailey) Poston, Rashelle (Steven) McVey, Ashley Lotozo (Nate Thomas), Gage (Abby) Lotozo, Bailey Lotozo, Zachary Sagan, Kaitlyn Sagan, Stephen Sagan, Abigail Sagan, and Allysen Sagan; great-grandchildren: Nash and Knox Poston, Peyton, Parker and Paxton McVey, Leah, Nora, Cade and Anna Lotozo, and Claire Thomas; sister-in-law Idelle Sagan, brothers-in-law Dave and Thomas Sagan and many nieces, nephews and their children. Martha devoted her professional life to education, serving as an elementary school teacher primarily in the New Lexington School District. She touched the lives of countless students through her patience, dedication, and belief in the value of learning. She was a caring educator who encouraged her students to reach their full potential. Faith was a cornerstone of Martha’s life. She was a proud and active member of Holy Trinity Parish. She also cherished lifelong learning, meaningful friendships, and opportunities to serve her community, serving on the state and county board of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, and a member of the Nondescript Book Club. Martha was known for her warm and welcoming spirit. She truly never met a stranger, possessing a rare gift for making everyone feel like a friend. Whether striking up a conversation with someone she had just met or reconnecting with a longtime friend, the reigning Mrs. America genuinely enjoyed people and built meaningful relationships wherever she went. Her kindness, compassion, and interest in others made her a beloved presence in her community. Martha will be remembered for her personality, generosity, steadfast faith, and unwavering devotion to family. Whether teaching in the classroom, participating in parish activities, gathering with friends to discuss the latest book, or spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, she lived a life filled with purpose, grace, and love. While her family mourns her loss, they find comfort knowing that her example of faith, perseverance, and kindness will continue to guide them for years to come. May she rest in peace. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at the Bope-Thomas Funeral Home in Somerset. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 30, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Andre’ Joseph LaCasse, O.P. as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
