Marjorie Ann (Dyke) DeLamatre, 91, teller of tall tales and ornery to her core, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 16, 2023, in Somerset, Ohio with family by her side.
Born April 22, 1932, in Lorain County, Ohio, Marge grew up on her father’s farm near Lattasburg, Ohio and graduated from Chester High School in 1950 before going to college at Bowling Green State University, where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. She spent most of her 30-year career as a guidance counselor at Millersport High School.
Marge and her husband, Howard (Pete), raised their four children on a farm in Perry County near Somerset, Ohio. She loved hosting family and friends for holidays, poker games, and general chaos amongst the endless stream of cats and dogs that accompanied life on the farm. Her family and friends can attest to her great love of practical jokes and irreverent sense of humor.
Marge was a traveler. In her younger days, she and some of her closest friends toured Europe and had lots of good stories to share. After retirement she expanded her travel horizons; traveling with her sister-in-law, Elsie, to visit Tim in Africa, and hitting the road with Pete in whichever direction they could find golf and a poker game. She especially enjoyed the winters they spent in Tucson, playing golf and poker, and soaking up the sunshine with family and friends.
She is survived by her daughters, Chris DeLamatre and Marty DeLamatre; her son, Tim (Mary) DeLamatre; her grandchildren, Joe (Emily) Stanley, Nick (Macy) Stanley, Emma Stanley, Katie DeLamatre, and Sam DeLamatre; her brother-in-law, Ward DeLamatre of Huron, Ohio; as well as nieces and nephews across the country who all have fond memories of visiting “The Funny Farm.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence S. and Ruth (Bechtel) Dyke; her husband, Howard DeLamatre; her son, Mike; and her son-in-law, Rusty Furniss.
Funeral arrangements and a caring cremation are being handled by the Bope-Thomas Funeral Home in Somerset. A private family service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers or donations, the family encourages everyone to take a walk, plant a tree, or feed some birds in honor of Marge’s birthday being Earth Day and to remember how much she loved the outdoors.
