Obituary
Jonn Louis Simmons, 77, of Glenford, Ohio passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at his residence.
Jonn was born January 29, 1946, in Reese Station, Ohio, the son of the late Clarence A. and Dona (Myers) Simmons. He was a graduate of Sheridan High School. He attended Ohio University where he received his B.S. in Elementary Education, his M.A. in Educational Administration and continued post graduate studies. Jonn was honorably discharged after serving in the Ohio National Guard Lockbourne Air Force Base and the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command in active duty in Korea with the 121st Tactical Fighter Wing, 121st Tactical Fighter Group and 166th Tactical Fighter Squadron.
Jonn was a teacher at Glenford Elementary and a principal at Somerset Elementary. He had various interests, such as rocks, minerals, Native American flint artifacts, and the performing arts. Jonn performed as “Inky” in the Northern Local Community Christmas Show and Somerset Minstrel Show, and sang in the Junction City, Millersport, New Lexington and Sheridan Minstrel Shows.
Jonn is survived by his wife, Sue Ellen (Mechling) Simmons; daughter, Katherine Simmons and son-in-law, Jordan McCallum; son, Dan Simmons and daughter-in-law, Jessica Simmons; grandson, Grant McCallum; granddaughter, Claire McCallum; brother-in-law, Steve Mechling and sister-in-law, Deb Mechling; nieces, Elizabeth Mechling and Melanie Hall; nephews, Sam Mechling and Victor Matkovic; great nephew, Ellis Matkovic; great niece, Mila Matkovic; aunt, Carol Shrider; cousins, Beth Luebbe, Ben Shrider, Andrew Shrider, Ann Shrider Mortimer, Eric Mortimer, Hannah Mortimer, Lucas Mortimer, and other cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Eloise Mechling and father-in-law, Bernard Mechling; a brother, Donn Simmons; sister, Freida Simmons Holden; uncle, Richard Shrider; godson, David Shrider; and cousin, Shirley Mechling.
Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 11, 2023, at Grace Lutheran Church, 65 E. Columbus St., Thornville, Ohio. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 11, 2023, at the church with Pastors Thomas Jacobson and Theresa Jacobson officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, Glenford, Ohio with graveside military honors provided by the Somerset American Legion Leo Ryan Post 58.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Eloise Mechling Musician Athlete Scholarship Fund at Sheridan High School.
