John T. Palmer, 75, of Thornville passed peacefully Wednesday March 29, 2023, surrounded by family, after an extended illness.
He was a career truck driver for 45 years, an avid fisherman, Ohio sports enthusiast loving his Buckeyes, Reds and Browns. After honorable discharge from Army service that took him to Vietnam he continued serving his community and Veterans as Commander, Vice Commander and other offices at AmVets Post 51 and Thornville American Legion. He was quite a colorful character and loved to tell his jokes.
John is survived by his loving companion and ace caregiver, Cathy Smart, 3 children – Candace Palmer, Dan Smart and Brett Palmer, 6 grands, 5 great-grands, 1 “Sitter” and 1 nephew. Many thanks for exceptional loving care go to his “girls” of Central Ohio Hospice.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 1, 2023, from 1-4 pm at Thornville United Methodist Church, 30 E. Columbus St, Thornville, Ohio, with services to follow. Post 51 Patriot Riders will escort John’s last ride home for final military salute and taps. A meal and time of sharing will follow at the Thornville Village Lanes, Clum Drive, Thornville, Ohio, across the road from the lane.
Bope-Thomas Funeral Home in Somerset is entrusted with the arrangements.
