John David Adamik, Sr, 83, of Zanesville (formerly of Somerset), passed away on Friday, March 7, 2025. John was born on June 5, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late John and Susan (Valentine) Adamik. When he was around five years old, John and his family moved near Pleasant City, Ohio, where he and his siblings were raised. John graduated from Buffalo High School, in nearby Buffalo, Ohio, in 1960. After a couple of years of working various jobs, John enlisted in the U.S. Army and served at Fort Greeley, Alaska, at a weapons testing facility near the base. John loved his time in Alaska and enjoyed sharing stories out of his experiences. He would eventually meet his future wife, Mary Ann Gerlisky, in Detroit; he was introduced to Mary Ann by one of his cousins, who lived in Detroit. After John was honorably discharged from the Army, the two were married on October 15, 1966. In 1969, John’s employer in Detroit transferred him and his family to Columbus, Ohio. He eventually moved on from that job and began working for Big Bear Foods at their warehouse near downtown Columbus. He worked for Big Bear for the next 34 years, retiring in 2003. John was an active union member and served on contract negotiating teams to secure better pay and benefits for the warehouse employees. During the early years of working for Big Bear, John and his family would relocate to the rolling hills of Perry County, near Somerset. This would be where John and Mary Ann would spend over half of their adult lives: raising a family, growing huge vegetable gardens (John was especially known for his cantaloupe), raising cattle, and making many good friends. John enjoyed many hobbies in life, especially fishing, gardening, working on cars, fast-paced walking (he used to walk up to eight miles a day on the country roads around his home), volunteering for political campaigns, and cheering on the Ohio State University Buckeyes. Watching the OSU football team with the National Championship earlier this year thrilled him! In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by a sister, Marlene Adamik; a brother, Joseph R. Adamik, Sr; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Goldberg Adamik; a brother-in-law, Charlie Brewster; and a nephew, Scott Brewster. John will be greatly missed by his loving wife of over 58 years, Mary Ann; two sons, John D. Adamik, Jr. (Jamie) and Chad R. Adamik (Thomas Blake); two grandchildren, Steven J. Adamik and Madison Adamik; a sister, Kathleen Adamik; and a brother, Thomas Adamik (Jacquie); as well as by several nieces, nephews, co-workers, and friends. A ‘Celebration of Life’ service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at the Bope-Thomas Funeral Home in Somerset where calling hours will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow immediately after the service at Community Gardens Cemetery, on St. Rt. 13 between Somerset and New Lexington. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in John’s memory to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Zanesville, where John and Mary Ann have been members for many years.
