James “Jim” Poorman, 73, of Somerset, passed away at 9:10 a.m. Friday, August 19, 2022, at his sons’ residence.
Jim was born September 16, 1948, in Lancaster, Ohio, to the late James and Joanna (McClintock) Poorman. He was a graduate of Sheridan High School where he was active in FFA and served as vice president and treasurer. Jim was active in the Ohio FFA Alumni where he served as chairman. He was an active farmer his whole life and seed corn dealer for Dekalb for 30 years.
Jim was drafted into the Army and spent two years serving during the Vietnam era. He received a rank of Sergeant where he was assigned gunner on the artillery section. He served as the Republican Central Committeeman for 39 years and the last 16 years on the board of elections for Perry County. He was a 4-H leader for approximately 10 years and served on several committees for the Somerset United Methodist Church. Jim was an avid toy tractor collector. He won the senior division of large-scale diorama contest in Dyersville, Iowa in 2012.
Jim is survived by his wife, Joanne G. (Weber) Poorman, whom he married on July 20, 1974. They have two daughters and one son, Jennifer Poorman of Dayton, Ohio, Janice and Jake Wolfinger of Lexington, Nebraska and Jason and Gracee Poorman of Somerset; five grandsons, Ethan and Owen Beam, Tucker and Colton Workman and Obed Poorman; and two granddaughters, Jacie and Jaelin Wolfinger; a brother, John and Carol Poorman of Somerset and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at the Bope-Thomas Funeral Home in Somerset and one hour prior to the service at the church. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 25, 2022, at Grace Lutheran Church in Thornville, Ohio with Pastor Tom Jacobson officiating. Burial will follow in New Reading Cemetery with military honors being provided by the Somerset American Legion Leo Ryan Post 58.
