James Alton Large

James Alton “The Whistler” Large, 91, of Newark, formerly of Somerset, passed away at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at his sisters’ residence. Jim was born August 6, 1931, in Somerset, Ohio, the son of the late Albert Sr. and Nellie (Cleary) Large. He was a Korean Conflict Air Force Veteran and a lifelong member of Somerset Church of Christ. Jim had a lot of knowledge of the Bible and shared it with all who knew him. Jim loved playing guitar and harmonica and singing with friends and family. His specialty was Gospel and Blue Grass music, and he could whistle like a songbird. He would bring up songs on his phone and would sing along with them. He also enjoyed hunting and finding mushrooms. Jim liked a good road trip and during the Covid pandemic, he and Cathy went all over Ohio, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, wherever the car would go. He is survived by his three sons, Steve (Tina) Large of Somerset, Stewart Large of Rushville, and Scott Large of Junction City; 13 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren; one sister, Cathy Harvey of Newark, whom he lived with. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Valorie Browning; one son, Samuel Large; one sister, Alice Harvey, three brothers, Albert Large, Jr., Benjamin Large, and Paul Large. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at the Somerset Church of Christ where services will be held at 12:00 p.m. with Scott Pfettscher, Doug Oakes, and Jim Morgan officiating.
