James Richard “Butch” Courtney, 74, of Somerset, passed away at 2:09 a.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at Genesis Healthcare in Zanesville. Butch was born June 1, 1948, in Mt. Vernon, IN, the son of the late John R. and Mildred (Durban) Courtney. He was a production manager at Namco Controls for 18 years then as an over-the-road semi driver for nine years before retiring due to health issues. Butch enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing, and he was a fantastic cook. He put his wife through nursing school and supported her with all her animal hobbies. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Vivian (Cogswell) Courtney; sons, Jason and Tracy Courtney, Michael Perry; and daughter Marcy Hoffman; brothers, Rodger Courtney and Charles Pfingston; five sisters, Joann Cowan, Diane Craddock, Marsha Lake, Patricia Hite, and Penelope Merritt; grandchildren, Craig Perry, Tyler Hoffman, Trevor Hoffman, and Trenton Hoffman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Perry Courtney; two brothers, Dale Wayne Courtney and John Richard Courtney, Jr; one sister, Rita Jane McBride. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 24, 2022, in Community Gardens, 5080 St. Rt. 13, NE, New Lexington, Ohio 43764. Bope-Thomas Funeral Home in Somerset is entrusted with the arrangements.
