Gary Lynn Shumaker

Gary Lynn Shumaker, 75, of Somerset, passed away at 4:15 a.m. Monday, June 5, 2023, at his residence. Gary was born October 23, 1947, in Rehoboth, Ohio to the late Raymond and Kathryn (Cummings) Shumaker. He was a graduate of New Lexington High School and a Vietnam Navy veteran serving from 1965-1968. He worked for Peabody Coal for 22 years and retired from Hirschvogel. Gary was a member of the Somerset Masonic Lodge and Somerset American Legion Leo Ryan Post 58. He enjoyed farming, coal mining, gardening, and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Janet Shumaker; two sons, Jason (Jen) and Justin Shumaker; grandchildren, Brayden and Chloe Shumaker; several nieces and nephews; and his faithful companion, Bella the dog. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Sonny; and sisters, Betty, Nell and Charlotte. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, June 8, 2023, at the Bope-Thomas Funeral Home in Somerset where services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 9, 2023, with Roger Mills officiating. Burial will follow in Community Gardens with military honors provided by the Somerset American Legion Leo Ryan Post 58.
