Donald Edward Smith Obituary
Donald Edward Smith, lovingly known as Big Guy-Bud-Smitty, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 29, 2026. Born February 7, 1950, and raised in the Hills of Logan County, West Virginia, he carried his roots with him throughout his life. He was proud of where he came from and the values that shaped him, hard work, loyalty and love for his family and friends. Don served his country in the United States Army before a lifetime of hard work. He dedicated 23 years to Peabody Coal Company and later spent 15 years with Advantage Tank Lines. More than anything, he loved the simple things in life, fishing, hunting, golfing, planting a garden, canning green beans, telling stories and spending time with people who mattered most. He had a quiet strength, a stubborn streak, and a heart much bigger than he often let people see. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Dawn (Moore) Smith, whom he built a life together with, filled with love, challenges, unwavering devotion and countless memories. Also left to honor his memory is his great niece and special girl, Brittney McConaha with whom he shared a bond that words can hardly describe. From the day she was born, Big Guy loved her with his whole heart and treasured every moment they spent together. Grady Kolometz has been a very special part of Bud’s life since he was six weeks old. For the past 20 years, they’ve shared countless memories-fishing, golfing, playing chess, enjoying cheese popcorn and peach cobbler, building chicken coops and most importantly, simply spending time together. The bond they share is one built on love, laughter and two decades of unforgettable moments. Shawn and Jennie Kolometz were not family by blood, but they were family in every way that truly mattered. Their love, friendship, unwavering loyalty and support meant the world to Bud, and he cherished them as part of his family. Also surviving are two beloved pets, Rico and Ollie; son Matthew Smith; brothers-in-law, Dan and Angela Moore of Conway S.C., Doug and Jodi Moore of Conway S.C., Duane and Elaine Moore of Thornville, and Dwight Moore of Zanesville; sisters-in-law, Donna Valentine of Lancaster and Onetia “Duddy” Smith of White Sulphur Springs, WV. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Ade and Hurst Smith; mother and father-in-law, Dwight and Donna Moore; brothers, Junior, Jack, Bo, and Ron Smith; and sisters, Juanita Calhoun, Betty Hathfield and Sheila Smith. In keeping with his wishes, a private celebration of Don’s life will be held by invitation only at a later date.
