M. Ruth (Comer) McGaughey

Ruth McGaughey, 81, of Somerset, passed away Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Select Specialty Hospital in Newark, Ohio.
Ruth was born January 20, 1936 in Mt. Perry, Ohio, to the late William and Grace Comer. She was a 1954 graduate of Somerset High School. She married her high school sweetheart, David M. McGaughey on April 4, 1955.
Roy and Ruth McGaughey, along with their sons, Albert, David and his wife Ruth, originated the McGaughey Service Station and Dairy Freeze in November of 1958, making them small business owners in the Somerset community.
“Ruthie” as she was known to her many customers, friends and her community was owner/operator of McGaughey’s Dairy Freeze for 57 years, which is where Ruth became famous for her shakes, sloppy joes, coney dogs, shredded chicken and sundaes. She was one of the first woman business owners in Somerset, Ohio. Ruth was an avid supporter of the local community charities, organizations, and the local farmers’ market. She loved the people of Somerset and they loved her.
Ruth is survived by her husband of 62 years, David McGaughey; two daughters, Teresa (Dave) Forsythe and Peggy Sue McGaughey; two grandchildren, Hollie Forsythe (Abbott) and Curt Forsythe; two great-grandsons, Ethan and Owen Abbott; two sisters, Chloe Jean Hand and Patricia Allen; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Robert and Patrick Comer; two infant sisters, Wilma and Wanda Comer; three sisters, June Dupler, Mary Arbaugh, and Violet Smith; and brothers-in-law, Albert McGaughey, Melvin Dupler, Wayne Smith and Reford Allen.
Friends may call from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, April 9, 2017, and one hour prior to the service at the Somerset United Methodist Church, 139 East Main St., Somerset, Ohio where services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 10, 2017 with the Rev. Karen Walters officiating. Burial will follow in Somerset Cemetery.
