Welcome to the memorial page for

Janice Anita (Johnson) Hammond

February 12, 1957 ~ October 3, 2017 (age 60) 60 Years Old
Janice Anita Hammond, 60, of Thornville, passed away at 10:06 p.m. Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at The Pickering House in Lancaster after a 13 year battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family, friends, and loved ones.
Jan was born February 12, 1957 in Columbus, Ohio to Ruth D. Garey Johnson of Thornville and the late Herman W. Johnson.
She was a 1975 graduate of Sheridan High School and attended vocational school for culinary arts. She worked at Quality Farm and Fleet for a number of years where she met her husband of 25 years. Jan ran her own catering business, managed Mrs. Field’s Cookies, cooked for Zanesville City Schools, and was a teacher’s aide for Northern Local School District. She loved her husband and daughters unconditionally. She had a big heart and her love of people and animals affected everyone who knew her. Jan could always be counted on to bring a smile or a hug to those who needed it most.  Sending cards to brighten the days of those in need was a special talent of hers.
Jan spread her love with her award-winning peanut butter fudge and many other scrumptious recipes. She loved helping her mom at Green Thumb Gardens for most of her life. Her love of gardening was passed through the generations and she always loved using her homegrown produce in her cooking, as well as sharing it with her many friends. She was ornery and always had a witty remark, even in difficult situations.
Jan is survived, in addition to her mother, by her husband, Tracy Hammond, whom she married September 9, 1992; her daughters, Kristie and Angela Hammond; brothers, Jim (Cheryl) Johnson and Bob Johnson; sisters, Kathy Johnson and Cindy (Joe) Shuster; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a brother, John Johnson and a sister, Mary Lou Briggs.
Friends may call from 3-6 p.m. Friday, October 6, 2017 at the Bope-Thomas Funeral Home in Somerset. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 7, 2017 at Olivet Church of the Brethren with Pastor Daniel Fullen officiating. Burial will follow in Somerset Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Perry County Cancer Alliance, P.O. Box 724, New Lexington, Ohio 43764.
